In May 2012, Tekamaki provided overall event Technical Direction, Stage Call, managed overall event union labor, provided source and screen routing, and projection design for the 3 day 2012 NewSchools Summit in San Francisco. This summit is an annual gathering for venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, educators, and policymakers who are passionate about the power of new technologies to transform and improve public education for underserved children. For this year’s NewSchools Summit they relied on Tekamaki’s decades of experience to ensure that the correct presentation technology solutions were utilized for a maximum of effect, yet still stay within budget.
Melding disparate projector resolutions; matching their output to the production cameras color temperature; wrangling the many signal formats, and managing technical queues are all areas that helped make a successful show. There are many options and technologies to choose from when designing a system for live events and budgets can quickly be maxed out. But Tekamaki knew how to create the right balance of quality equipment to price ratio and still create a fresher, higher impact environment for the attendees.
For this NewSchools event a Barco Encore screen routing system was required to best handle the multiple video playback formats that were to go to various resolution screens. One design element Tekamaki introduced was the use of (2) stage-to-ceiling vertical-oriented projection screens just behind the stage as a video and graphic backdrop of school children behind the presenters. The (2) main 9′x16′ outboard screens were used for live cameras(I-Mag), speaker support slides, interstitial graphics, and video clips. On one special evening an additional custom 10′ by 24′ wide cinema ratio projection screen was integrated upstage center to showcase a very special pre-release screening of the Hollywood film “Won’t Back Down”, with director Daniel Barnz on stage afterwards. The event was an acclaimed success and the far surpassed all past events in production quality and execution.
